Unrefrigerated Food Trucks Highlight Need For Food Transportation Training

CAFSP Offers Food Transportation Training for Food Protection Officials

Knoxville, Tenn., Sept. 27 — The Center For Agriculture & Food Security & Preparedness (CAFSP), a member of the Food and Agriculture Protection Training Consortium (FAPTC), is offering DHS-certified training at no direct cost to law enforcement, public health, industry, and state and local food protection officials.  “Sharing Information and Intelligence Related to the Importation and Transportation of Food” is a one-day course focusing on issues related to food importation and the safety of transporting food throughout the U.S.

Food transportation is often ranked as one of the most vulnerable links in the food chain.  The Today Show expose’ on September 22 showed some of the common problems seen with driver and temperature abuse of food destined for stores and restaurants.  This course provides food protection officials with training on identification and information- sharing procedures regarding the importation and transportation of food throughout the entire food chain.

“This timely training was designed to address the vulnerability of the food supply at an often ignored point in the system,” said Sharon Thompson, CAFSP Director. “This course arms those responsible to assure food safety with the tools they need to detect and prevent these problems.”

“We are pleased to support such a critical course,” said Gerald Wojtala, Executive Director at the International Food Protection Training Institute (IFPTI).  IFPTI is the administrative hub of FAPTC. “Training is the key to preparing our government, industry and public health officials to address issues in the food supply,” such as unrefrigerated trucks delivering spoiled food to local communities.”

FAPTC members offer a wide range of training courses for government food and agriculture officials.  Many of these courses are offered at no direct cost to government agencies.

The Center for Agriculture and Food Security and Preparedness (CAFSP) is located at The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in Knoxville, TN.  Founded in October of 2006, the Center is dedicated to assisting the nation to protect its critical infrastructure, including agriculture and the food supply. The Center, under the direction of Dr. Sharon Thompson, combines the expertise of University of Tennessee faculty with other institutions across the country to develop and deliver high quality training programs related to protection of the agriculture and food sectors, and conduct research and provide technical assistance related to food safety, food defense, animal emergency response, foreign animal diseases, and more.

The Food and Agriculture Protection Training Consortium (FAPTC), is comprised of eight university-based training centers along with the International Food Protection Training Institute.  It is focused on developing and delivering food protection training primarily to U.S. government regulatory officials at the federal, state, local, tribal and territorial levels along with others responsible for the safety of the U.S. food supply, such as industry, third party auditors, and regulatory officials in other countries.
